When I eat a lot of carbs, especially refined carbs found in bread and pasta I get tired and sluggish, the total opposite to when I eat clean. When I eat a high fat high protein diet with low carb my body is just so much more efficient. I get more done and I feel great.
There’s been a heap of coverage over the last few years about sugar and flour. These were defiantly the staple of my diet growing up.
Luckily I’m not a huge fan of sugar I’m a savoury guy but Demi, she loves it. And it’s not good. 8 out 10 of my clients struggle with sugar. It’s a constant fight I deal with.
With about 70% of Americans being overweight it’s no surprise that recent research has come out saying that sugar is 8x as addictive as cocaine. That’s just insane. Just take a moment to take that in. Its eight times as addictive as cocaine!
So why is sugar so bad.
They say sugar and flour are the cause of inflammation which leads to most metabolic diseases. Such as type 2 diabetes, heart disease and obesity. These are all diseases that we get from food.
Sugar is making you fat.
Over consumption of sugar and refined sugars including flour for example is being used as the body’s primary energy source and any access that’s more than our caloric needs is being converted and stored as fat for later use.
The problem is that we never use it up and we keep on over consuming. This is what’s causing a lot of weight gain in humans.
On top of this, insulin, the hormone responsible for regulating our blood sugars is making us feel tired. When you eat foods with a high Glycemic index, so sugars and flour, our insulin levels rise up to deal with the increased amount of sugar in our blood.
Once said sugar has been successfully transported and stored you get a drop in blood sugar levels which makes you feel tired. This constant abuse up and down can and does lead to Type 2 diabetes.
So these are possibly the two main reasons we don’t want too much sugar and refined carbs in our diet, especially if we are trying to lose weight or live a healthy lifestyle.
But there’s a problem, we just mentioned it. Sugar is highly addictive and the more sugar you eat the more you crave. So just how do you stop this vicious cycle. Well in the 6 week transformation challenge we take you step by step through the process but it looks something like this.
Here’s 6 steps you can take to kick your sugar addiction for faster fat loss and better health.
Step 1 – Make a decision a quit
This might sound simple but as you might already know quitting something you love is very hard to do. But if you aim to do it and totally eliminate all sugars for the next 7 days you will be able to do it. And after the 7 days you do the same thing, aim for 7 days and keep doing this until you no longer crave sugar.
Step 2 – Actually do it
So you’ve made the decision to quit sugar that’s great now you really have to do it for the next 7 days. Including flour and sweeteners.
Step 3 – Eliminate all processed foods
Remove all highly processed foods and junk. They will make you feel like crap and are not good for you.
Step 4 – Eat real food
Start to eat real whole foods, lots of vegetables, good natural fats from meat, seeds, nuts, fish etc and some protein.
Step 5 – Manage your stress
Another hormone called Cortisol also know as a stress hormone is elevated at times of stress. Cortisol stops you from burning fat and actually makes you store it. It also makes you feel hungry and crave sugar.
Step 6 – Get plenty of sleep
Aim for 7-8 hours of sleep. If you live off 5 or 6 chances are you just don’t know you need more until you get it. Feeling tired leads to hunger and over eating.
